Desire and power: it’s a tale as old as time played out countlessly in the artist/muse dynamic. “Symphonie fantastique” by Hector Berlioz is one such example of a multi-layered attempt to capture the fluttering beauty of unrequited love. Using this 19th century composition as the inspiration, Little Eggs Collective inject some queer imaginary and disco fever for a hallucinatory story of revenge.

The Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey conducted by the Australian Government in 2017 was a controversial decision that sparked a turbulent and retraumatising time for LGBTQIA+ people, particularly those who remembered the recent civil rights debates in Tasmania. From 1988-1997 gay rights activists campaigned to decriminalise homosexuality in Tasmania, the last state to do so; a campaign honoured in Campion Decent’s verbatim play the Campaign.

With them he can shut out the rampant fascism and hatred taking over his precious country. On this night in particular, however, he may return to his memories for the last time.
Charles O’Grady’s third original play makes a return to the stage at Kings Cross Theatre as part of Sydney’s 2018 Mardi Gras. Are We Awake? details a crucial morning in the lives of Endymion (Mathew Lee) and Hypnos (Daniel Monks) as they navigate the complexities of their relationship. O’Grady’s script is a well-balanced one which flows smoothly between the joy, desire, frustration, anger, and (dis)comfort of contemporary queerness, disability, love, and external practicalities. It’s a balance placed in the safe hands of director Sarah Hadley who adds a delicate direction to the two-hander.
